You can use the shape tool in the vector section of the Fireworks toolbar to create a variety of different shapes that you can then edit and manipulate. If you click and hold on the button it brings up different options. Once you drawn something, you can then edit the properties at the bottom of your page.
To build familiarity, create a shape collage and experiment with the different properties such as fill colour/pattern and line colour/thickness.
